Comparsa Key West
Our Comparsa Key West Group consists of approximately fifty
Key Westers. The one thing we all have in common is that we are "Cuban at heart".
We will relive the days of the old Comparsa dancers in Key West
and lead the "Coast to Coast" Conga Line.
The history of Comparsa dancing in Key West goes back to the
days
of the Cuban Cigar factory workers who would gather at the Cuban
Club on Duval Street and dance on Saturday nights as a form
of entertainment. Ladies and Gentlemen would dance in synchronized
steps and weave in and out as they saschaed down the street.
Men with "Farolas" (paper-mache lanterns) would dance on the
perimeter of the lines and twirl them creating a carnival-like
atmosphere. Costumes were bright and flashy with layers of ruffles.
Movements were fluid and smooth responding to the Afro-Cuban
drums.
If you would like to join our group, call 305-295-9665. Everybody is welcome.
